Hapkido Seminar - Nenagh Academy 4th October

A three-hour intensive Hapkido seminar was conducted by Master kirkwood on Satruday the 4th of October at Nenagh Martial Arts Academy to enhance participants’ understanding and proficiency in the Korean martial art of Hapkido.

The session was designed to cover both the fundamentals and advanced techniques, catering to beginners as well as experienced practitioners. The seminar aimed to improve self-defense skills, body coordination, flexibility, and mental discipline.

The objective of the seminar was to introduce the principles of Hapkido, its foundational stances, strikes, and falls.  To also develop proficiency in joint locks, throws, and defensive maneuvers. It allowed participants to build a knowledge of complex Hapkido techniques and combinations.

Hapkido promoted discipline, focus, and respect within martial arts practice.

The session began with a series of dynamic stretching and mobility exercises to prepare the body for training. Participants performed cardiovascular drills, joint rotations, and basic strength exercises emphasizing balance and flexibility.

Master Kirkwood introduced fundamental Hapkido movements, including:  Proper stances and posture, Basic strikes (punches, open-hand strikes, and kicks).  Breakfalls and rolls (Nakbeop) to ensure safe practice during throws.

Simple wrist grab releases (Sohn Mok Su).  During the seminar the students progressed to more dynamic techniques, focusing on:  Joint locks and control (Kote Gaeshi, Nikyo variations), Basic throws and takedowns.  Also Defensive techniques against front and rear attacks, incorporation of redirection and circular motion principles.

The last phase covered more sophisticated and situational self-defense applications:  Combination techniques integrating strikes, locks, and throws.

The seminar concluded with relaxation exercises, breathing techniques, and a group reflection on lessons learned.

The key takeaway for the seminar was the importance of mastering basics before advancing to complex maneuvers.

Understanding the efficiency of circular motion and leverage in self-defense.  Enhanced coordination, control, and confidence in handling attacks.  Reinforcement of discipline, respect, and mindfulness—core tenets of Hapkido philosophy.

Master Kirkwood recived much enthusiasm from the students and about the seminar’s structure.  The progression from basic to advanced techniques allowed all attendees, regardless of experience level, to benefit from the training. The seminar successfully fostered a deeper appreciation for Hapkido as both a martial art and a means of personal development.

Master Kirwood would like to thank Mrs Philomena Ryan for hosting the event and thanks all those who participate on the day. It was a joy to teach you all, espceially the children who had fun learning defence moves.
